The classic designs which were initially used in slot machines are today almost replaced by machines which are computer controlled. However, the game has more or less remained the same. How Slot Machines Work

In the classic slot machines, the design had been based on a configuration of levers and gears. There had been a central element known as a metal shaft which supported the reels. The shaft would be connected to a handle which would set things in motion. There also had been a braking system which made the reels stop and the sensors which communicated the position of the reels to the payout system. There had been a coin detector which would registered whether or not the coin had been inserted and then the brake would be unlocked so that the handle could be moved.

There are several different ways in which these same elements can be arranged and many different variations have been tried over the years. Today, most slot machines have the reels mounted on a central shaft. It also supports notched discs which in turn are connected to the reels. There is a kicker supported by the central shaft. There are also a series of stoppers which lock into these discs.

This program constantly keeps producing combinations of numbers which correspond to the symbols on the reels. When the player pushes the button, the number which is generated by the RNG would be where the slot machine reels will stop.
